Two London-based artists led a special one-day Urban Art workshop at Mundells, Welwyn Garden City, recently.
The event was hosted by Hertfordshire Business Services (HBS), part of Hertfordshire County Council, in association with the art material suppliers, edding.
The aim of the day was to help encourage young artists in the county to channel their artistic flair and energies in a positive and constructive way – towards conventional and personal media rather than public property.
The two artists, Cutter Skink and Teck 1, who took the session demonstrated a whole range of Urban Art techniques to 28 budding artists and art teachers from 11 Secondary schools from around the county, as well as giving them guidance on how best to develop their talents.
The participants tried out various materials and media, including acetates, canvas, boards, t-shirts, trainers and glass – using permanent markers supplied by Edding rather than spray paints.
James Nikiforides, a tutor at Hockerill Anglo European College, Bishop’s Stortford, said: “This workshop was exceptional for young adults. Minimal talk, maximum hands-on practical work. Perfect for students who want to experiment with new techniques”.
“The workshop was a unique opportunity for HBS to support a nationally recognised art initiative, following on from the increasing interest in the subject shown by schools around the country,” said Executive Member for Education and Culture, Keith Emsall. “With events like this, we hope to engage young people who have such obvious enthusiasm for urban art forms – and help them find the best way of directing their creativity in a positive way.”
